We birded the area around our hotel, the Inkaterra Hotel Machu Picchu Pueblo (in Aguas Caliente), the morning of Tuesday, January 10, 2012. A juvenile male Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Rupicola peruvianus, was one of the species that we photographed. A medium-sized passerine in the Cotinga family, it is native to the Andean cloud forests and is the national bird of Peru. This juvenile has a small crest and orangish coloration except for the grayish-brown wings. The iris is white, and the black bill has a horn-colored tip. Temperatures were in the 70's on this overcast morning with intermittent rain. This juvenile seemed to be watching us closely to make sure we didn't get too close.
