We birded the area around our hotel, the Inkaterra Hotel Machu Picchu Pueblo (in Aguas Caliente), the morning of Tuesday, January 10, 2012. A juvenile male Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Rupicola peruvianus, was one of the species that we photographed. A medium-sized passerine in the Cotinga family, it is native to the Andean cloud forests and is the national bird of Peru. This juvenile has a small crest and orangish coloration except for the grayish-brown wings. The iris is white, and the black bill has a horn-colored tip. The species exhibits marked sexual dimorphism with adult males having brilliant orange plumage and a large disk-like crest. The female is darker and browner in color. Groups of males compete for breeding females on a lek with the males displaying, bobbing, and hopping around while making grunts, chuckles, and meowing to attract a female. The polygamous male has nothing to do with nesting. The female is left to rear the young by herself after making a nest on a rocky overhang, laying, and incubating the eggs (typically two white-colored eggs). Temperatures were in the 70's on this overcast morning with intermittent rain.
