We birded the area around our hotel, the Inkaterra Hotel Machu Picchu Pueblo (in Aguas Caliente), the morning of Tuesday, January 10, 2012. A juvenile male Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Rupicola peruvianus, was one of the species that we photographed. A medium-sized passerine in the Cotinga family, it is native to the Andean cloud forests and is the national bird of Peru. This juvenile has a small crest and orangish coloration except for the grayish-brown wings. The iris is white, and the black bill has a horn-colored tip. Fruit, insects, and even small vertebrates such as frogs and lizards are part of its diet. The species has been recorded following army ants along the rainforest floor. Temperatures were in the 70's on this overcast morning with intermittent rain.
