We spent part of the morning and early afternoon of January 8, 2012, birding the Huacarpay Lakes area which is located in the central highlands of Peru. This wetland area houses a variety of high elevation aquatic birds (most seen from a distance) and is a thirty minute drive from Cuzco that traverses a road through high altitude shrubland habitat. A male Black-tailed Trainbearer, Lesbia victoriae, was perched in a nearby shrub when I took this photograph. The male is between 7-10 inches long with most of the length due to its long elegant tail (streamers). Wings, tail, and throat look black (depending on the angle of light). The rest of the bird is green with a grayish lower belly. Its distinctive hovering flight on rapid, blurred wings and its needle-like bill are identifying characteristics. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this overcast afternoon with intermittent rain.
