We left Yucay by bus early in the morning on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, for the train station in Ollantaytambo. This is an important halfway station between Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Here we caught the Hiram Bingham Train for a 1.5 hour ride that took us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). Brad photographed a Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Boissonneaua matthewsii, while we were birding near the reception area of our hotel, the Inkaterra Hotel Machu Picchu Pueblo. The bird's glittering green throat contrasts with its rufous-chestnut colored lower breast, belly and tail. The bill is short on this stout, heavy-bodied hummer. The fact that it has a habit of holding its wings upright over its back for a second or two after alighting on a new perch is an feature that can be used to ID the species. Temperatures were in the 70's on this overcast morning with intermittent rain.
