After an early breakfast on January 11, 2012, Brad and I spent several hours birding around our hotel, the Inkaterra Hotel Machu Picchu Pueblo, in Aguas Caliente. Set in twelve acres of terraced hills in the cloud forest of the Andes along the Vilcanota River, it was a lovely place to bird. A Collared (Gould's) Inca, Coeligena torquata inca, with its long, straight bill, was perched in the forest. It is a variety of Collared Inca that is found in the humid Andean forests of south-eastern Peru. The 'collar' or broad breast-band is rufous. It was a humid, sunny morning with temperatures in the upper 70's.
