We spent the afternoon of January 10, 2012, visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site (1983) of Machu Picchu. As the afternoon wore on, the clouds began to lift, and the sun broke through illuminating this Vizcacha "Rabbit" as it moved along the rock crevasse. This is probably a mountain (or southern) viscacha species, Lagidium viscacia. It is closely related to chinchillas, but resembles a rabbit with its long ears. However, its tail is longer. Note the reddish tinge to its grayish coat or pelage. Temperatures were in the low 70's with humid conditions.
