We spent the afternoon of January 10, 2012, visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site (1983) of Machu Picchu. As the afternoon wore on, the clouds began to lift, and the sun broke through illuminating this pair of Vizcacha "Rabbits" grooming themselves. These animals probably belong to the mountain (or southern) viscacha species, Lagidium viscacia, and are closely related to chinchillas. They look similar to rabbits but have longer tails. Their coat or pelage has a reddish tinge. Temperatures were in the low 70's with humid conditions.
