We birded the area around our hotel, the Inkaterra Hotel Machu Picchu Pueblo (in Aguas Caliente), the morning of Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Brad photographed a Golden-crowned Flycatcher, Myiodynastes chrysocephalus, that was perched on a wire near the rushing Vilcanota River. This species is partial to mountain streams and forest edges. The head is boldly patterned with a yellow crown stripe (semi concealed) followed on either side of the head with a gray stripe, a white stripe, a black line (mask) through the eye, another white stripe, and, finally, a gray stripe at the neckline. Underparts are yellow with blurry dark chest streaking. Temperatures were in the 70's on this overcast morning with intermittent rain.
