We left Yucay by bus early in the morning on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, for the train station in Ollantaytambo. This is an important halfway station between Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Here we caught the Hiram Bingham Train for a 1.5 hour ride that took us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). Brad took a side-view of a Green-and-White Hummingbird, Amazilia viridicauda, while we were birding near the reception area of our hotel, the Inkaterra Hotel Machu Picchu Pueblo. This Peruvian Endemic has green upperparts and white underparts. It is similar to the White-bellied Hummingbird, but its bill is slightly shorter, prefers drier habitats, and has a dull, bronzy-green colored underside of the tail. Temperatures were in the 70's on this overcast morning with intermittent rain.
