During mid-afternoon on January 7, 2012, Brad and I took a city tour of Lima. After visiting the Plaza San Martin, we headed to the Plaza Mayor. The Plaza de Armas of Lima (Plaza Mayor) is the birthplace of the city of Lima. It is located in the Historic Center of Lima and is surrounded by the Government Palace, Cathedral of Lima, Archbishop's Palace (Palacio Arzobispal) of Lima, Municipal Palace, and the Palace of the Union. Our next stop was the Church of Saint Francis (Iglesia de San Francisco), the most visited church in Lima. It was built in 1674, and its yellow color and "Lima Baroque" style of architecture make it unique. Following a visit to the main floor of the church, we headed downstairs into the catacombs. The catacombs were Lima's first cemetery, and it is here where the bones of approximately 75,000 people can be found in the underground tunnels. Many are stacked in eerie geometric patterns...skulls alternating with femurs radiating out from a central pile of skulls...just plain creepy (no photos allowed here). Temperatures were in the upper 80's on this overcast, humid afternoon.
