During mid-afternoon on January 7, 2012, Brad and I took a city tour of Lima. After visiting the Plaza San Martin, we headed to the Plaza Mayor. The Plaza de Armas of Lima (Plaza Mayor) is the birthplace of the city of Lima. It is located in the Historic Center of Lima and is surrounded by the Government Palace, Cathedral of Lima, Archbishop's Palace (Palacio Arzobispal) of Lima, Municipal Palace, and the Palace of the Union. Our next stop was the Church of Saint Francis (Iglesia de San Francisco), the most visited church in Lima. It was built in 1674, and its yellow color and "Spanish Baroque" style of architecture make it unique. The complex is made up of a temple, a convent and two other churches, La Soledad and El Milagro. The front portal, shown here, is carved out of granite. A harmonious yellow-colored stucco padding covers the walls on either side (typically a roosting site for local Rock Pigeons). Temperatures were in the upper 80's on this overcast, humid afternoon.
