After a leisurely breakfast at our hotel, the Sonesta Hotel El Olivar located in the municipality of San Isidro (Lima, Peru), Joanne and I headed across the street to bird El Olivar Park. I took this picture of Joanne while she was standing near a water feature in the park. The Olive Grove, "El Olivar," of San Isidro Grove Park, was declared a National Monument on December 16, 1959. The olive trees in the park date from colonial times. With Peru's independence in 1821, the Spaniards left...but not before they cut down the olive trees. Some of the branches sprouting from these same tree trunks are nearly two centuries old and give the trees a disproportionate appearance. Approximately thirty species of birds including Saffron Finch, Blue-gray Tanager, Blue-black Grassquit, Shiny Cowbird, and Amazilia Hummingbird can be found in this 300 square meter size park. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this hot and humid morning.
