We spent the afternoon of January 10, 2012, touring Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1983). Archaeologists have determined that construction at the site began around 1450, had approximately 200 structures, and was occupied for a century. Exactly who lived there and why is still an open topic for debate because of the absence of written documentation and sufficiently explicit material evidence. Perhaps, as some archeologists believe, it was constructed for the Incan emperor Pachacuti (1438-1472). Joanne and Brad are sitting near the Guard House on their way down to lower elevations of the site. Skies cleared as the afternoon wore on, and temperatures rose into the low 70's with increasing humidity.
