I took this photograph of Huayna Picchu the morning of Tuesday, January 10, 2012, while we were driving up the Hiram Bingham Road to Machu Picchu. Huayna Picchu or Young Mountain is towards the north of the citadel and appears in the background of most photos of Machu Picchu. It is located in the Cuzco Region, Urubamba Province, Machupicchu District. It rises over Machu Picchu, the so-called lost city of the Incas and divides it into sections. The Incas constructed a trail up the side of Huayna Picchu and built temples and terraces on its top (elevation: 8,290 feet). Access is up a long stairway and is limited to 400 entrants per day. A few ruined buildings and structural terraces remain at the site. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this overcast morning with intermittent rain.
