We left Yucay by bus early in the morning on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, for the train station in Ollantaytambo. This is an important halfway station between Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Here we caught the Hiram Bingham Train for a 1.5 hour ride that took us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). The Urubamba River is about 450 miles long. It rises in the Andes Mountains in southern Peru and flows in a northerly direction to join the Apurímac River to form the Ucayali (we cruised on this river while visiting the Amazon). The Urubamba is used for irrigation. Cuzco and Peru are located in its valley. Machu Picchu is located high above the river's gorge. Temperatures were in the 60's on this overcast morning with intermittent rain.
