We spent the afternoon of January 10, 2012, visiting the ruins at Machu Picchu. Located 7,970 feet above sea level, Machu Picchu overlooks the Urubamba Valley. The site is separated into three areas-agricultural, urban, and religious. Structures were arranged so that the function of a building matched the form of its surroundings. Agricultural terracing (right side of photo) and aqueducts took advantage of the site's natural slopes; lower areas contained buildings occupied by farmers and teachers; and the most important religious areas were located on the crest of the hill. As the afternoon wore on, skies cleared, and temperatures rose into the low 70's with increasing humidity. Fewer tourists remained at the site...many had to catch the last train out of Aguas Caliente.
