We spent the afternoon of January 10, 2012, touring Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1983). Archaeologists have determined that construction at the site began around 1450, had approximately 200 structures, and was occupied for a century. Exactly who lived there and why is still an open topic for debate because of the absence of written documentation and sufficiently explicit material evidence. Perhaps, as some archeologists believe, it was constructed for the Incan emperor Pachacuti (1438-1472). The thatched roof on this structure, the Guard House, has been restored. Skies cleared as the afternoon wore on, and temperatures rose into the low 70's with increasing humidity.
