We spent the afternoon of January 10, 2012, touring Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1983). Archaeologists have determined that construction at the site began around 1450, had approximately 200 structures, and was occupied for a century. Exactly who lived there and why is still an open topic for debate because of the absence of written documentation and sufficiently explicit material evidence. Part of a terraced hillside is shown in this photo. No lawnmowers are used to cut the grass at Machu Picchu. Cutting grass and weeds is accomplished by hand using a machete... grazing llamas also help. Skies cleared as the afternoon wore on, and temperatures rose into the low 70's with increasing humidity.
