We spent the afternoon of January 10, 2012, visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site (1983) of Machu Picchu. As the afternoon wore on, the clouds began to lift, and the sun broke through illuminating this beautiful example of Incan masonry near the Sacred Square. The trapezoidal shaped doorways shown here line up with one another. The Incas were masters of a technique called ashlar in which blocks of polished stone were cut to fit together tightly without the use of mortar. Many junctions are so perfect that not even a knife blade fits between the stones. Temperatures were in the low 70's with humid conditions.
