We spent the afternoon of January 10, 2012, visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site (1983) of Machu Picchu. This photograph chronicles our visit to the Temple of the Condor, an excellent example of Incan stonemasonry. A natural rock formation was skillfully shaped by the Incas into the outspread wings of a flying condor. The head and neck feathers were carved in a rock on the temple's floor to complete a three-dimensional figure. The condor's head may have been used as a sacrificial altar. Directly behind this temple stands a prison complex complete with human-sized niches as well as an underground labyrinth. As the afternoon wore on, skies began to clear with temperatures in the low 70's.
