Brad and I spent January 9, 2012, birding around our hotel, the Sonesta Posadas del Inca Sacred Valley, Yucay, (Urubamba) Peru. This Rufous-collared Sparrow, Zonotrichia capensis, ran rapidly through the grass when we came too close. The species is mainly granivorous and forages on the ground typically near shrubby cover. Adults have a stubby gray bill. The gray head is marked with broad black stripes on the side of the crown with thinner stripes running through the eye and below the cheeks. Upperparts are streaked black on buff-brown with some rufous shading. The nape is a bright rufous color. Underparts are grayish, and the throat and two wing bars are white. Temperatures were in mid-70's on this lovely morning with partly cloudy skies.
