Brad and I were birding in El Olivar Grove Park the morning of January 7, 2012, when we spotted a Saffron Finch (Sicalis flaveola) foraging in the grass. The park was declared a National Monument in 1959 to protect the centuries-old olive trees that grow there. Easy access to the park from our hotel, the Sonesta Hotel El Olivar (located in the municipality of San Isidro - Lima, Peru), facilitated birding there and provided good looks at some local bird species. This member of the tanager family has olive-yellow colored upperparts, and bright yellow head and underparts. The male has an orange crown. The upper mandible is gray, and the lower mandible is an ivory color. Temperatures were in the mid-80's on this hot and humid morning.
