Brad and I were birding in El Olivar Grove Park the morning of January 7, 2012, when we spotted a Scrub Blackbird (Dives warszewiczi) perched in a nearby tree. The park was declared a National Monument in 1959 to protect the centuries-old olive trees that grow there. Easy access to the park from our hotel, the Sonesta Hotel El Olivar (located in the municipality of San Isidro - Lima, Peru), facilitated birding there and provided good looks at some local bird species. The individual shown here is leucistic and has white patches on its body resulting from a subset of its pigment-making cells failing to develop. Temperatures were in the mid-80's on this hot and humid morning.
