After an early breakfast on January 11, 2012, Brad and I spent several hours birding around our hotel, the Inkaterra Hotel Machu Picchu Pueblo, in Aguas Caliente. Set in twelve acres of terraced hills in the cloud forest of the Andes along the Vilcanota River, it was a lovely place to bird. A Streaked Xenops, Xenops rutilans, was busy foraging in a nearby tree. Xenops are small ovenbirds that forage like piculets. They hop or hitch along bare branches or vines in their effort to glean for arthropods. It is similar to the Plain Xenops but has streaking on its mantle and underparts. A prominent white supercilium and malar stripe are visible. Upperparts and tail are rufous. It was a humid, sunny morning with temperatures in the upper 70's.
