I took this photograph of a female Torrent Duck, Merganetta armata, the morning of Wednesday, January 11, 2012, while we were birding the grounds of our hotel, the Inkaterra Hotel Machu Picchu Pueblo, in Aguas Caliente. We were walking along the Vilcanota River at the base of the Andes when we spotted this female, with its gray upperparts and rusty-red colored underparts, feet, and bill, perched on a rock in the rushing water. It was a humid, sunny morning with temperatures in the upper 70's.
