We left Yucay by bus early in the morning on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, for the train station in Ollantaytambo. This is an important halfway station between Cuzco and Machu Picchu. Here we caught the Hiram Bingham Train for a 1.5 hour ride that took us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). Along the way, we saw this male Torrent Duck, Merganetta armata, perched atop a rock in the Urubamba River. This long-bodied duck is found along rushing mountain streams where it forages for aquatic insects, mollusks and fish. The male has a black cap that extends down to its nape. A black line from just before the eye extends through the eye down to the nape. A vivid red bill highlights the bird's white head. Northern males tend to be paler overall and whiter below than southern males. Temperatures were in the 60's on this overcast morning with intermittent rain.
