After a leisurely lunch at our hotel, the Sonesta Hotel El Olivar located in the municipality of San Isidro (Lima, Peru), the afternoon of January 12, 2012, Brad and I headed across the street to bird El Olivar Park. Brad took this frontal view of a West Peruvian Dove, Zenaida meloda, to show the indigo-blue colored patch of featherless skin that surrounds each brown eye. A bold white wing patch on its wing coverts appears as a brilliant white crescent when the bird is in flight. Adults have red legs and feet. The species is a conspicuous member of Lima's urban avifauna. Temperatures were in the upper 80's on this hot and humid afternoon.
