We flew from Lima to Cuzco the morning of January 8, 2012. It took us some time to adjust to the difference in elevation, 10,500 feet versus sea level. The Huacarpay Lakes area is located in the central highlands of Peru. This wetland area houses a variety of high elevation aquatic birds (most seen from a distance) and is a thirty minute drive from Cuzco that traverses a road through high altitude shrubland habitat. This White-browed Chat-Tyrant, Ochthoeca leucophrys, showed up just as were we sitting down to a picnic lunch. It is a common and widespread chat-tyrant of open country in dry areas between 2,400-4,200 meters altitude. Upperparts are dark gray, while underparts are a lighter gray. It has a bold white superciliary that runs across the lower forehead and over the eyes. Plain wings have white edgings to the secondaries. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this overcast afternoon with intermittent rain.
