This is a photograph a plaque describing the 5,000 year old chambered tomb and henge monument at Maes Howe which is located in the heart of the Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site on Mainland Orkney. Maes Howe was build on a circular platform 125 feet in diameter. The tomb is built above ground, complete with side chambers and a low 30 foot long entrance passage with a large swivelling blocking stone in place at its outer end. (One can enter the tomb via this low, slightly uphill passage in a crouched position.) Some of the slabs of rock used in the construction weigh up to 30 tons and were dragged a considerable distance to this site. The tomb may have been used to house bones of the dead. It is known that the alignment of the tomb was used as a calendar. The weather was pleasant with temperatures in the high 60's.
