This is a photograph of a plaque which shows some of the runes left in the 12th century by Norsemen who broke into the 5,000 year old chambered tomb and henge monument at Maes Howe which is located in the heart of the Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site on Mainland Orkney. What started out as graffiti back in the 12th century has turned into 24 groups of inscriptions that are the best collection of stone carved Norse runes in our time. The weather was pleasant with temperatures in the high 60's.
