We sailed around Sørkapp, the southern tip of Spitsbergen, and then northeastward toward Edgeøya for a possible landing at Russebukta during the morning of August 3, 2010. Brad photographed this Black Guillemot from our balcony on the National Geographic Explorer. Adults have red feet and a pure white underwing edged in black. In summer plumage (shown here), adults are all black with large oval white upperwing patches. Temperatures were in the 40's with partly cloudy skies. Our planned landing at Russebukta was canceled because of fog (a dangerous situation with Polar Bears around). We sailed north along Edgeøya to Freemansundet, a large bay between Edgøya and Barentsøya, for a possible landing later in the day.
