Early in the afternoon on August 3, 2010, we made our second Zodiac landing at Isbjornodden. We were sailing in one of the fjord arms in Freemansundet, a wide bay between the islands of Edgeøya and Barentsøya and landed on the north coast of Edgeøya. This photograph shows Joanne and a VENT guide walking on the tundra. Our guide, Magnus, had just yelled to us that we had to leave the area ASAP because a Polar Bear was sighted nearby by another crew member patrolling the shoreline in a Zodiac. Two cracker flares were fired at the bear to try and dissuade it from coming closer and to slow it down. So, after a brief 1.5 hours on shore, we quickly left the area and headed back to the ship. Temperatures were in the low 40's on this partly cloudy afternoon.
