After a two hour flight from Oslo, we arrived in Longyearbyen, the largest populated area and the capital of the Norwegian Svalbard Archipelago. Since our ship, the National Geographic Explorer, was not ready for boarding, Lindblad took us on a short excursion around the city. We stopped at the Longyearbyen Church, the world's northernmost church, and Community Center. Access is 24/7 with the only restriction being that visitors take their shoes/boots off and replace them with the slippers provided. Temperatures were in the high 40's with partly cloudy skies.
