This is a photograph of Joanne standing next to the Look Out for Polar Bears sign found on the outskirts of Longyearbyen. Gjelder hele Svalbard meand "the entire Svalbard." Bears could be anywhere, and the Government of Svalbard (Governor) recommends that travelers are properly armed when traveling outside the settlement. Hiring a guide (armed) or joining an organized tour (required to be armed) is recommended. The bears are protected, and all encounters with polar bears involving the use of firearms are investigated (with possible hefty fines). Temperatures were in the 40's with partly cloudy skies.
