During the morning of August 3, 2010, we were on the aft upper deck area of the National Geographic Explorer when Brad photographed this Northern Fulmar as it flew by the ship. This photograph shows the bird's tube nose, bull neck, and stout bill. Three subspecies have been identified. This is Fulmarus glacialis glacialis based on its location near Spitsbergen. Temperatures were in the 40's with partly cloudy skies.
