During the early afternoon on August 3, 2010, we were in one of the fjord arms in Freemansundet, a wide bay between the islands of Edgeøya and Barentsøya. Here we made our second Zodiac landing at a place known as Isbjornodden. Brad photographed this lone Svalbard Poppy, Papaver dahlianum, which is known as Svalbard's "national flower." This flowering plant is found on open, dry ground and is the tallest-growing of all Svalbard's flora. It is widespread throughout the archipelago and exists in two varieties, the white (shown here) and the yellow flowered. Temperatures were in the 40's on this partly cloudy afternoon.
