During the night of August 3, 2010, we sailed in the Barents Sea and headed for the southeastern corner of the massive Nordauslandet Ice Cap arriving there during the morning of August 4th. We took a Zodiac cruise in the area near Isispynten (landings were too dangerous because of the fog and ever present Polar Bears). Nordaustlandet is the second-largest island in the Svalbard archipelago. Much of Nordaustlandet lies under large ice caps, Austfonna, Europe's largest glacier, and Vestfonna. The remaining parts of the island are tundra areas inhabited by reindeer and walruses. The island is uninhabited and lies entirely within Nordaust-Svalbard Nature Reserve. Temperatures were in the low 30's with partly cloudy skies and heavy fog.
