We saw this Lewis's Woodpecker foraging in the woods near the side of the road as we were driving along the Plumtaw-Piedra Loop, a 35 mile round trip. The Plumtaw Road is a Forest Service access road that begins in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, as Four Mile Road at the corner of Lewis and Pagosa Streets. It is substantially higher in elevation than most other back roads in the county and affords both scenic views and good looks at many avian species. A flash of red caught my eye, and we pulled over to see what it was. There were two adult woodpeckers feeding a juvenile. It was a cloudy to rainy morning with temperatures in the low 60's.
