Temperatures were in the upper 50's on this sunny morning. We were on the Woodpeckers of Southern California birding trip (San Diego Bird Festival). We had stopped for a picnic lunch at Lake Cuyamaca and saw this tree full of sapsucker holes. The holes drilled are approximately one-eighth of an inch in diameter and are evenly spaced up and down and around the trunk. It almost looks as if the holes were drilled by a machine. In most cases, sapsuckers do not seriously harm trees. The holes are shallow and the wounds do not cause significant or permanent damage. However, a particular tree may become a favorite feeding place for an individual sapsucker. If this happens (as in this case), large areas on the trunk may be dotted with many holes. When this happens, the tree may be weakened and become more sensitive to disease or drought. The wounds themselves may attract harmful insects.
