We were hiking in the woods surrounding Piedra Falls (near Pagosa Springs, Colorado) when we photographed this male Three-toed Woodpecker. The woods in this area contained some interesting species (Brown Creeper, Mountain Chickadee, Northern Flicker, and Golden-crowned Kinglet). It was a partly cloudy afternoon with temperatures in the mid- to upper 70's.
