Brad photographed a White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus) perched on a bare, broken branch. We were driving around the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana the morning of August 23, 2012, with our group and guides (VENT and local) in a safari vehicle looking for big game and birds. The dark eye and white back (best seen when the bird is in flight) are used to identify the species. Down feathers are only found on the head and neck. The wings are broad, and tail feathers are short. Temperatures were in the low 80's on this sunny morning with clear skies.
