We left our hotel, the Hotel do Bosque in Pereque, Rio de Janeiro state, on the morning of October 18, 2011, to bird the lowlands near Pereque. Brad photographed this King Vulture, Sarcoramphus papa, perched along the side of the road. This sub-adult has white underparts and black upperparts. The eyes are straw-colored, and there is a reddish-orange, fleshy wattle directly above the nostrils. Temperatures were in the 70's on this foggy day with intermittent heavy rain.
