After birding at Refugio de Vida Silvestre-Pantanos de Villa Marshes (Lima, Peru) the morning of Friday, January 13, 2012, we drove to a beach area near Club Garza Real to look for shore birds before driving to Pucusana. Brad photographed an adult Great Grebe, Podiceps major, the largest species of grebe on earth, that was swimming in the Pacific Ocean. It has dark upperparts, whitish underparts, a long thin rufous colored neck, and a dagger-like bill. A typical diet for this species consists of fish, crabs, and, occasionally, the young of other waterbirds obtained by diving. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with hazy skies and high humidity.
