We spent the early evening of Sunday, January 15, 2012, birding along Yapara Creek, a tributary of the Amazon River located below the main confluence of the Ucayali-Marañón Rivers. Brad photographed a Russet-backed Oropendola, Psarocolius angustifrons, that was perched near its long, pendant nest. This large blackbird is mostly a dull brown in color with a rufescent rump, dark bill, and olive coloration about the head. The undertail is a bright yellow. Males are significantly larger than females. Temperatures were in the mid to upper 80's with blue skies and high humidity.
