We were birding along Sapote Creek the morning of Wednesday, January 18, 2012, when I took this photograph of an abandoned dwelling along the tributary in a váreza or floodplain forest area. I guess the place wasn't completely abandoned because two Black Vultures can be seen roosting on the roof rafters. Temperatures were in the mid-70's with overcast skies. We were in Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, an area of protected floodable forest or váreza in the Amazon Rainforest, that is bordered by the Marańón in the north and the Ucayali-Puinahua Canal to the south. Of the 94 communities in this area, 21 of them belong to the Cocamilla ethnic group.
