We spent the morning of Sunday, January 15, 2012, birding along a small tributary (Tapara Creek) of the Amazon below the main confluence of the Ucayali-Marañón Rivers. We were birding the Tapara Creek river islands looking for river island specialists when I took this photograph. Temperatures were in the mid-80's with partly cloudy skies. Seasonal floodplain forests inundated by white water rivers that occur along the Amazon River Basin are known as várzea habitats. These habitats consist of forests, grasslands, lakes, flooded fields, and swamps. While in the Amazon, these were the habitat types we birded as opposed to terra firma where we only had one birding expedition.
